To get into the festive spirit this week; one of the Year 9 classes at our Wings School Cumbria spent their history lesson making Christingles. These were invented during the Victorian Era and became a popular part of Christmas celebrations. The orange represents the earth, the ribbon represents Jesus' blood, the candle represents Jesus being the light of the world and the sweets represent the fruits of the earth.
Year 9 have been studying the Victorians this term and looking at the inventions that changed the C19th world. Over the past two lessons they have also been looking at how the Victorians changed Christmases in England; with Christmas trees, crackers, Christmas cards and also Christingles becoming traditional in England.
