It’s been a busy term for the Equestrian programme at our Wings School Cumbria.
This term they have been looking at some basic horse care and handling, including ground manners, leading, grooming, yard management, feeding and many other topics. These topics have also been linked into appropriate key stage written tasks to help consolidate their learning.
The children have also been developing life skills whilst working at the yard including communication, confidence, teamwork, responsibility, perseverance, and relationship building. One of the highlights this term was a visit from Caroline Kaye, a practitioner in Equine Bodywork, who taught two groups of children some basic massage techniques to aid healing, relaxation and bonding with their horses.
Many of the children have also had the opportunity to work with Woody, a new team member, kindly built and donated by Roy and Liz Axten.
They had a lot of fun taking part in a special Christmas photo shoot with their favourite horses at the end of term, with Glynis Bland Photography.
Overall, it has been a brilliant term and they have a lot planned for 2023, hopefully including visits from a Racing School instructor, a horse agility instructor, a local vet and much more!
Well done to all the young people and a huge thank you to Miss Atherton, Miss Wadsworth and Miss Phillips for their commitment and continued hard work.
