For some children, learning in a classroom is difficult. The environment can be too stimulating, or too restrictive. Being “classroom-bound” can prove to be a barrier to learning, particularly for young people with SEMH, autism or other complex learning difficulties.
Wings School Cumbria has recognised that offering opportunities to learn outside of the classroom can boost young people’s engagement and ability to learn – as well as their love of learning itself.
The Education team based at Wings School Cumbria have recently redeveloped the school’s offsite and outdoor learning curriculum for such learners.
Outdoor learning can develop social communication skills, improve increased physical health, boost an individual’s mental health, improve self- esteem and also be really fun in the process!
The aim is to offer subjects such as Maths, English, Environmental Science, Environmental Art, PHSE, History, Geography, Bushcraft, The John Muir Scheme, Land based studies, Paddle boarding, equine facilitated learning and a Sailing Program utilising the extensive grounds and local rural environment.
Looks like a fantastic part of the curriculum which will continue to benefit many more who attend Wings School Cumbria.
Wings School Cumbria is a nurturing and caring community where there is a passion for learning and mutual respect for all. Interested in a placement? Why not get in contact on 0800 024 6985 or [email protected]
