Earlier this year we were delighted to share that across our Year 11 leavers, young people in Kedleston’s schools achieved an impressive 550 qualifications between them including GCSEs, Foundation Studies and BTECs. But those achievements are just part of their journey.
Since gaining those qualifications, students have moved on to positive destinations in further education, training and employment including apprenticeships, places at mainstream colleges and full-time work.
The range of destinations these young people have moved on to reflects how personalised their hopes and ambitions for the future are; from a young man from Wings School Cumbria moving on to study A-levels at a local grammar school sixth form college to a young man from Brookways School securing an apprenticeship in green-keeping at a golf course – they demonstrate how the young people have been supported to gain the qualifications they need to take their next desired step in life.
Across Kedleston we have seen more than 70% of this 2022’s Year 11 leavers move on to further education. A number have moved on to mainstream sixth form colleges to sit a variety of A-levels including Business Studies and Economics, Biology, Chemistry, Maths, Physics, History, Politics, Film Studies, Computer Science, English, History and Psychology. Others have moved on to undertake Diplomas in subjects ranging from Animal Management, Music Performance and Production and Digital Graphics.
Others are studying Veterinary Nursing, Catering, ICT and Media.
Kedleston’s Regional Directors for Education, Victoria Bates and Heather Millington, were delighted with the results: “Far too often young people with social, emotional and mental health difficulties, autism and other complex needs and their families have been led to believe they will be unlikely to ever sit an exam, attend college or get a place on a training course, and subsequently struggle for employment.
“We have such high aspirations for the children who attend our Kedleston schools and believe that for them, anything is possible and they can achieve their ambitions. This year’s amazing array of positive destinations shows that is exactly the case – just because a young person has challenges or difficulties does not mean they can’t pursue their ambitions. They can, and with the right support, they do. It is up to us to give them the tools they need to succeed.
“Success may take different forms, but our focus is always on the young person achieving a goal - or taking a step closer to achieving a goal. Their next phase after school is one of those steps and as these destinations show, this year’s Year 11 leavers are moving in the right direction to achieve their potential.”
