School Cook

Hours – 8.00 – 3.00 (30 hours) Monday to Friday

Salary - £18,000 per annum (pro-rata £13,500)

Start date – expected June 2020

Mill School Bury is an independent special school catering for young people who have an EHC plan. The school specialises in Social Emotional Mental Health (SEMH) and Autistic Spectrum Condition(ASC) and the young people can be challenging in their behaviour. The school has an emphasis on building trusting and solid relationships and has an ethos of empathy and care. The school will need to obtain a five-star rating for food and hygiene rating for the business place.

The School Cook will have experience in a food environment and will carry relevant qualifications in catering for a school kitchen. All staff are expected to interact with the young people in a caring and professional manner. The role will possibly include some cookery and nutrition teaching under direction of a qualified teacher for our pupils and any applicant will need to show willingness to work with the young people beyond the basic role of a school cook.

Person specification:

· Current food hygiene certificate with up to date knowledge and understanding of food hygiene requirements

· Experience of catering for large groups producing healthy meals on time and to a budget

· Ability to design quality menus with the input of the pupil ambassadors

· Ability to monitor costs and work within a budget

· Ability to work to a high standard with minimal supervision on a day to day basis

· A strong understanding and knowledge of record keeping which will ensure that the school canteen retains its 5 star rating

· Previous experience of working with vulnerable or disadvantaged young people (Desirable)

· First aid qualification (Desirable)

· Interest in special educational needs particularly with reference to autism and social and emotional difficulties

· A desire to help teach pupils in the kitchen and encourage pupils to complete work experience in the kitchen environment

Key tasks of the role (Including but not limited to):

· To plan, prepare, cook and serve food to meet the cultural needs and interests of the young people, staff, parents and visitors including breakfast and lunch.

· Cater for any special one off requirements including occasional school or home functions, for example Summer Graduation.

· Plan menus and take into account the needs as defined by the school and pupil ambassadors

· To provide for the individual dietary needs of young people, families, staff and visitors

· To ensure health and safety in the kitchen and adhere to food hygiene practices at all times

· To manage the equipment in the kitchen and report any maintenance issues that may arise

· To maintain sufficient stock efficiently minimising waste and fulfilling the needs of the young people and staff

· To meet all statutory requirements for Ofsted and Local Authority Hygiene inspections

· To regularly review suppliers and be assured that all suppliers are transparent and traceable

· To maintain up to date knowledge of special dietary requirements including food allergies

· To ensure that the kitchen is always clean and fit for purpose

· To promote and participate in a positive approach to Health and Safety in the delivery of all Mill School’s catering operations

· Promote effective waste management within the dining room and kitchen

· To gain a good understanding of all the young people including having a working knowledge of individual Risk Assessments and behaviour management plans

· Complete Team teach training in order to support the behaviour management of pupils attending the school

· Complete training required to understand the needs of the children
