At Silverways School, we follow the National Curriculum but our timetable has been designed to be flexible and personalised to meet the different need of the learners.
The curriculum is individualised for each young person. Many of our children will come to us having missed a great deal of education, so we will develop programmes for them which address their individual needs and developmental stage as well as their specialist interests.
When learning needs to be more experiential and play based, that is what we provide. When children are ready to adapt they will adjust to a more “hybrid” approach; a combination of play-based activities and a more formal learning model before they progress to a distinctly independent way of learning.
Curriculums are therefore designed to reflect their learning needs; matching their individual needs and developmental stage.
In Key Stage 4 children study for GCSEs, functional skills and ASDAN qualifications.
The location of the school provides many opportunities to learn from ‘real life’ experiences which prepare the young people for adulthood and enable them to develop the skills and confidence they need to contribute to their local community as adults. We promote independence, socialisation and the skills that are needed for adulthood.
The aim of the curriculum is to give children and young people the skills they need to thrive outside of school and give them the qualifications and experiences they will need to achieve their ambitions and goals, including attending college to study further, to take up an apprenticeship or other training or access employment.
Maths, English and Science are core subjects at the heart of the curriculum and it is the school’s aim to ensure each child leaves with a qualification at Foundation Studies or GCSE level in each of these subjects. The curriculum will broadly follow the subjects offered by the National Curriculum and those which are sought after by employers and colleges.
