Arc School Napton is our independent specialist primary school based in a small village in Warwickshire, registered for children between the ages of 5 to 11. Children come to the school because the environment they provide benefits children whose specific educational and social, and or emotional needs cannot be met in mainstream environments.
The team at the school have recently introduced the fantastic Zones of Regulation Programme which has been designed in line with the school’s ethos of ‘fostering self-control and emotional regulation’.
“Self-regulation is the ability to remain calm, cope with big emotions, adapt, and respond appropriately to our environment. Self-regulation is important because it allows children to do well in school, with friends, and at home. It helps children feel good about what they can handle and it helps children feel good about themselves.” - Cynthia Yoo, B.A., M.A., Registered Provisional Psychologist
The Zones of Regulation Programme incorporates a range of approaches designed to help children exercise their own control, help them teach them the best strategies for overcoming obstacles and how to self-regulate in order to become successful and achieve. The programme will utilise teaching and cognition strategies, Speech and Language strategies and Occupational Therapy strategies.
Children will learn how to use the strategies and tools to manage their feelings and own behaviours. Given that each child’s needs and preferences are so unique, the approach will explore various calming techniques, cognitive strategies, and sensory supports building a toolbox of methods to use to self-regulate.
The overall goal of the programme is to teach the children:
- To identify their feelings and levels of alertness.
- Effective regulation tools.
- When and how to use the tools.
- Problem solve positive solutions.
- Understand how their behaviours influence others’ thoughts and feelings.
The ultimate aim is to reach independent self-regulation.
This brilliant new approach at the school will provide the children and young people with the skills they need to be prepared for learning in the future to flourish.
