Sam* is fulfilling his potential at High Peak School. Previous schools had been unable to meet his needs and struggled to keep him engaged and settled in a classroom. He has ADHD, autism and dyslexia and found the learning environment challenging.
When he first joined High Peak a little over two years ago, he continued to experience behaviours that challenged him and still found it difficult to settle and engage in a class.
However, the team at High Peak saw his potential and went above and beyond to find approaches that would support him in the most positive way and let his ability, which was clear to see, shine through.
One of these approaches was to support Sam in a period of home learning. Staff went to his home and delivered core subjects, as well as taking Sam out on educational day trips to bring learning to life for him.
This proved to be successful and led to Sam gaining qualifications in his functional skills maths and English. Sam returned to learning at school and had a bespoke timetable created which centred around his talents in cooking. Sam is now working towards a cookery GCSE and works alongside the kitchen staff for work experience.
