Our classrooms are located to enable our young people to feel safe and calm. We aim for class sizes with no more than 5 children. The classrooms are designed and equipped to offer a need for a nurturing environment that meets sensory needs. Each room has access to Wi-Fi with laptops, tablets, desktops, interactive boards, and adjustable sensory mood lighting enhance and support their school journey.
We use state-of-the art interactive software to support learning, enable research, aid development and for recording the children’s work and progress. We are preparing to use learning programmes such as Accelerated Reader. Soft play and relaxation areas are present in the classrooms, accessible to our young people throughout the school day.
Sensory boxes with sensory play equipment are available for use at any time.
All the staff working with our young people are trained to support their complex learning and behavioural needs.
The outcomes we strive for with our young people include working towards re-engaging them with their education by overcoming their barriers to learning, enabling them to develop strategies to both manage and cope with their emotions as they meet educational challenges. Progress is closely monitored, and we involve each young person with this process.
The young people have access to the sports hall, outdoor playground, farm and our extensive grounds and gardens. Outdoor learning opportunities are available through activities such as our equine facilitated learning program, horticulture and conservation projects, water sports on Lake Windermere and Bush Craft Camps. There are specialist rooms on site for science, technology, art and design, and the performing arts.
The timetable for each young person is personalised for them. Break times and lunch/dinner times are scheduled to reduce any overwhelming situations for these younger children.
All young people have access to a wide range of clinical input from an on-site Educational Psychologist, a Clinical Psychologist, a Speech and Language Therapist, a School Nurse and a Health Care Assistant.
In conclusion, our work with young people is informed by the National Curriculum and we offer a gradual transition period for our young people to settle into their new school life. Our curriculum is personalised around each young person in order for them to have the greatest chance of achieving success and ultimately gaining the skills and qualifications needed for them to move on to the next phase of their life. We work with our young people to support them in understanding routine, structure, enjoying playing games, being able to take turns, form meaningful relationships, develop self-confidence and self-esteem and discover and reignite a passion for learning.
