Kerry** came to Wings School Notts in May 2020 and presents with significant trauma, attachment, communication and sensory needs.
Kerry does not always understand staff when they give her spoken information as she can a) misunderstand and b) forget what has been said.
Kerry does not always feel comfortable answering staff questions and can give short responses. The teaching staff asked Speech and Language Therapy for advice in finding a way to support Kerry with expressing her views and opinions about what she finds challenging and what strategies she would be happy to try.
Together, Speech and Language Therapy and school staff used ‘Talking Mats™’ to present information visually to Kerry to help her understand complex spoken information.
Individual Talking Mats were created for identifying communication challenges, certain behaviours identifying favourite food/drinks. Kerry was able to understand the topics and questions and express her views and opinions successfully. Staff were then able to identify strategies to support her further.
