For some children, learning in a classroom is difficult. The environment can be too stimulating, or too restrictive. Being “classroom-bound” can prove to be a barrier to learning, particularly for young people with SEMH, autism or other complex learning difficulties.
Wings School Cumbria has long recognised that offering opportunities to learn outside of the classroom can boost young people’s engagement and ability to learn – as well as their love of learning itself.
The Education team based at Wings School Cumbria has recently redeveloped the school’s offsite and outdoor learning curriculum for such learners.
The aim is to offer subjects such as Maths, English, Environmental Science, Environmental Art, PHSE, History, Geography, Bushcraft, The John Muir Scheme, Land based studies, Equine facilitated learning and a Sailing Program utilising the extensive grounds and local rural environment.
Biking along the shores of Morecambe, walking up Farleton Knott or tackling the climb up to Wansfell pike in Ambleside are just some of the amazing adventures the young people at Wings have chosen to take part in this week.
