The children and young people at our Wings School Cumbria have been taking part in the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch this year!
Thanks to people taking part in the Big Garden Birdwatch, the RSBP has over 40 years of data and this has helped increase their understanding of the ongoing challenges faced by wildlife.
It was one of the first surveys to identify the decline of Song Thrushes in gardens. This species was a firm fixture in the top 10 in 1979. But by 2019, those numbers had declined by 76% – coming in at number 20. And did you know that House Sparrow sightings have dropped by 53% since the first Birdwatch in 1979? However, in the past 10 years their numbers have grown by 10% showing that we are beginning to see some signs of recovery.
In their Art lessons, the young people created bird feeders out of recycled old cups, whilst in their Photography lessons they set up a live camera connected to the class iPad to capture the birds as they landed in the school courtyard. Look at these amazing photographs of some really beautiful birds...
The school is set within the beautiful, rural countryside which provides a brilliant opportunity for off-site learning. Facilities include full sized playing pitches, a sports hall, moto-cross & mountain bike tracks and an on-site farm with access to equestrian facilities. The outdoor learning enables those children and young people who find working in a classroom difficult the chance to re-engage in their education and the school community.
