Our residential school set in beautiful grounds on the edge of the Peak District, is looking for a pastoral mentor for our young people (ideally trained in Positive Behaviour Support techniques)
The post holder must provide support and guidance to children and young people who are experiencing difficulties in learning due to social, emotional or behavioural problems or other issues.
The support will help pupils to overcome behavioural, social or emotional problems that are affecting their learning.
This support is likely to include working individually with pupils, working with pupils in small groups, working with other parties/agencies including parents/carers.
The post-holder will work positively within the school’s curriculum and pastoral system to support:-
- the raising of standards in the school by providing support to individual pupils and their families.
- the pupils of the school by helping them to remove the barriers to their learning.
- the improvement of pupil punctuality, attendance and behaviour and assist the school’s pastoral programme in reducing exclusion.
Duties and Responsibilities Specific to the Post:
Mentoring individuals and small groups, and monitoring
- working with school staff to select students for mentoring
- discussing the aims of mentoring with pupils
- supporting pupils inside and outside of the classroom, providing information and advice to enable pupils to make choices about their own learning/behaviour/attendance
- agreeing and writing plans, including action plans, behaviour management plans and risk assessments
- advising teachers and teaching assistants on the best strategies for use with individuals
- contributing to the development and implementation of the behaviour management system in school
- being in regular contact with parents/carers about issues and offering advice about strategies to deal with specific behaviours
- liaising with schools, teachers, social workers and educational psychologists and making referrals where appropriate
- organizing and running drop-in sessions and extra-curricular activities eg for music and sports events
- organizing and running small group interventions
- aiding pupils with the transition to their next steps of learning, training or employment
- helping pupils to increase their confidence and self-esteem by listening to them and devising appropriate strategies
- receiving and supervising pupils excluded from, or otherwise not working to, a normal timetable eg pupils on induction
- monitoring the attendance, punctuality and behaviour of pupils.
- acting as a positive role model
The successful candidate will have:
- a relevant qualification in childcare or education
- experience of working with young people
- evidence of knowledge and experience of behaviour management
- excellent communication and listening skills
