Three young individuals from our Wings School Cumbria, all actively engaged in the school’s Equine Education Programme, recently embarked on an extraordinary adventure—an exhilarating session of Horseback Archery.
Emily Massey, a former British Champion and Bronze Medallist at the 2023 World Cup, generously offered her expertise to guide them through this unique experience. The workshop was nothing short of thrilling, injecting an extra dose of excitement into their equine education journey.
Among the participants was the enthusiastic Miss Atherton, who described the workshop as one of the highlights of her work with horses to date. The day began with Emily introducing the group to the basics of archery, emphasising safety as they practiced how to ‘nock’ and shoot arrows from a stable position on the ground.
Once the essentials were grasped, it was time for the real adventure to begin. The archery horses were brought into the arena, and the group faced the challenge of riding without reins. It was a test of their balance and coordination, as they honed their riding skills in preparation for the archery experience.
Taking turns, each participant rode the track, drawing their bows and taking aim at the targets. Remarkably, some even managed to achieve the elusive bullseye!
The workshop was not only educational but also a tremendous amount of fun. Everyone enjoyed the rare opportunity to be coached by a champion like Emily Massey. Miss Atherton was so pleased by the experience that she's already contemplating another session for the group.
Sounds like a fantastic experience.
