Understanding the process

Referrals and admissions

At Kedleston Group, we work in close partnership with families and Local Authorities to ensure our schools are the right fit for each learner. Our admissions process is designed to be clear, compassionate, and centred around the needs of the child.

All of our schools follow the Kedleston Group admissions process.

*Please note, whilst we accept parental enquiries, we cannot accept referrals directly from parents.

1. Initial referral

The first step is for the Local Authority to make a formal consultation to our Admissions Team. This will include the child or young person’s Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) and any relevant supporting documentation. Local Authorities will usually consult with several settings.

2. Paperwork review

Our Admissions Team will then carry out an initial assessment by reviewing the referral paperwork to understand the child’s needs and determine whether we may be able to meet them.

3. Assessment visit

If appropriate, we’ll invite the child and their family to attend an assessment visit to school. This includes a tour of the setting and an opportunity to meet the Headteacher and key staff. It’s a chance for families to ask questions and for us to better understand your child's needs.

4. Placement offer

Following the assessment visit, and if we believe we can meet your child’s needs, we will send an offer letter to the Local Authority with a proposed start date.

5. Transition planning

Once the offer is agreed, we’ll work closely with you, the child’s current setting, and the Local Authority to plan a smooth and supportive transition.

Consultation progress is always communicated with your child’s Local Authority.
