Stranger readers at Arc School Ansley

Monday, 23rd March 2026, 10:33

Hawkins High has arrived at Arc Ansley for World Book Day with pupils and staff transported back to the 1980’s!

As part of our Stranger Readers project this term to engage pupils in reading for pleasure and to increase reading skills, staff have dressed in a range of 1980s-themed clothing. Pupils have engaged with classic reading texts this week, “Never Ending Story” and “The Outsiders” through excerpts and audiobooks developed by the staff team. Today on World Book Day, pupils are engaging in physical literacy workshops blended from the Performing Arts and the English department for pupils to showcase their understanding of key texts and stories. Pupils will also receive reading rewards and finish the day off with literacy games and treats!

Pupil feedback has been positive with many pupils and staff discussing different 80s themed songs, books and films throughout the day. Key Stage 4 especially enjoyed their physical literacy workshop and found it a great regulation activity amongst their Functional Skills exams this week. Pupils have also dressed in a range of their favourite book characters and shared what they enjoyed about their books. Pupils have also received a World Book Day goody bag to take home and share with parents/carers.
