Meet Francis

Francis views Napton School as a place where they are understood, accepted and supported. Their journey reflects not only academic development, but a transformation in self-awareness, emotional resilience and happiness.

Francis is a thoughtful, insightful and resilient pupil who has made remarkable progress since joining us. Prior to this, Francis attended a mainstream setting where their school experience was extremely limited. Francis was taught almost exclusively in isolation, working 1:1 with a Teaching Assistant, without access to the class teacher. Francis was unable to access social times such as lunch and attended school for only 1–2 hours per day.

When Francis started here, a carefully planned phased transition was essential to support their emotional regulation and sense of safety. This slow and supportive approach allowed Francis to build trust, become familiar with routines and develop confidence in the environment. Over time, Francis successfully increased their attendance and now attends school full time.

Francis has shown exceptional personal growth during their time at Napton School They have challenged themself to take part in off-site visits, something that they had never been able to access previously. These experiences have helped Francis to develop greater independence, resilience and belief in their own capabilities.

Academically, Francis’s progress has been significant. In their previous setting, Francis did not engage with writing and never picked up a pencil. Since joining Napton School, Francis now accesses daily phonics sessions and completes writing every day. This demonstrates not only academic progress but also a profound shift in confidence, motivation and engagement with learning.

Emotionally, Francis has developed a much stronger understanding of themself. They are now able to talk openly about how their brain works and articulate why being in a specialist setting supports them. Francis recognises that they still experiences moments of dysregulation and, importantly, understands that this is okay, learning strategies to support themself and has developed the confidence to accept help from others when needed.

Socially, Francis has flourished, forming genuine friendships at school and now meets up with peers outside of school, something that was previously unimaginable. These connections have contributed greatly to Francis’s sense of belonging and self-worth.
