Year 8 Explore Science and Future Careers at Queen Mary University

Saturday, 10th October 2026, 08:30

Our Year 8 pupils recently enjoyed an exciting educational visit to Centre of the Cell at Queen Mary University of London, bringing their science curriculum to life through interactive activities and hands-on learning.

Located within a working biomedical research facility, Centre of the Cell introduced pupils to the fascinating world of cell biology. Building on their classroom learning, pupils explored how cells are structured, how they function, and why they are essential to all living organisms.

A particular highlight was the interactive games and challenges, which encouraged pupils to apply their scientific knowledge, work collaboratively, and develop their problem-solving skills. Pupils demonstrated curiosity and enthusiasm throughout, asking thoughtful questions and confidently engaging in the activities.

The visit also provided a valuable link between the science curriculum and future career pathways. By experiencing a university research environment, pupils gained an insight into how scientific knowledge is applied in professions such as medicine, biomedical science, genetics, and healthcare. It helped them recognise how the subjects they study at school can lead to exciting opportunities in further education, university, and employment.

Importantly, visiting a university also helped raise aspirations, encouraging pupils to see higher education and careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) as achievable ambitions for their own futures.

Our pupils represented Leaways exceptionally well, demonstrating outstanding behaviour, respect, and a genuine enthusiasm for learning.

A huge thank you to Queen Mary University of London for hosting such an engaging and inspiring visit. We look forward to returning!
