When Killian joined Mapesbury School in Pelican Class in June, he arrived with a clear enthusiasm for learning, particularly anything linked to business and enterprise. Yet, like many learners transitioning into a new environment, he also needed a setting that would recognise his interests, understand his individual needs, and help him feel safe, valued and ready to succeed.
From the very beginning, staff took time to get to know Killian as both a learner and a person. Conversations, observations and a thorough review of his paperwork helped us build a picture of what motivated him and what could help him flourish. His passion for business quickly became a powerful starting point. Lessons were thoughtfully adapted to incorporate opportunities for real-world problem-solving, entrepreneurship-themed tasks and practical scenarios that resonated with him. This personalisation immediately increased his engagement and sense of purpose.
The small, calm nature of Pelican Class played an important role in Killian’s successful transition. With fewer students and more opportunities for individual attention, he was able to build trusting relationships with staff who genuinely took the time to connect with him. He was also supported in preparing for changes within the class, including the arrival of new students, a transition he managed with maturity and positivity.
As these foundations of support and understanding grew stronger, significant changes began to emerge. Killian’s attendance improved dramatically. Apart from a small number of absences, he attended school every day, a noticeable shift from his previous patterns. At home, this change was even more visible. His mother shared that Killian had begun setting a morning timer for himself, taking responsibility for being up and ready for school. This new routine reflected a deeper change: he felt motivated, secure and increasingly confident in his place within the school community.
