Designed by pupils, for pupils. Themed around a tranquil woodland glade, the library has already been described as a “sanctuary for learning,” and it’s easy to see why.
This inspiring project was a true collaboration between students and staff, with every detail shaped by the voices and choices of the young people themselves. From the calming theme to the selection of books, the library reflects what matters most to the learners who will use it every day.
A Space Inspired by Students
The idea began with a simple question: What would make our library a place you want to be? Pupils responded with creativity and clarity. They envisioned a space that felt calm, therapeutic, and welcoming, a place where reading could be both relaxing and exciting.
Led by Head of English Sam Hocking, and brought to life by Maintenance Officer Dan Bowman, the transformation of the room into a woodland-themed haven includes:
- Comfy seating areas perfect for curling up with a good book
- Computer stations for research and digital reading
- Books chosen by pupils, including fiction and textbooks to support wider learning
A Celebration of Reading
To mark the opening, the school hosted a special ribbon-cutting ceremony. The President and Vice-President of the Student Council proudly opened the space, followed by poetry readings from pupils and a warm gathering with pastries and coffee.
Angela Howe, Headteacher at Arc School Ansley, shared:
“Reading is a key focus for us here. The pupils wanted to make sure our library was the very best it could be, somewhere they’d enjoy spending time and feel safe and inspired. It’s been a fully collaborative process, and we’re so proud of what they’ve achieved.”
The school’s commitment to reading goes far beyond the library. Initiatives like Reading Ambassadors, Speaker’s Corner, and author visits help foster a love of literature and learning across the school. Sam Hocking added:
“We are thrilled with the finished library. It’s everything we hoped for and more, and we can’t wait to see pupils enjoying it to its full potential.”
Supporting Neurodivergent Learners
Arc School Ansley, part of Kedleston Group, provides education for children with autism and associated social, emotional and mental health needs. The new library is a testament to the school’s commitment to creating inclusive, nurturing environments where every learner can thrive.
