The inspection was the school’s first since moving to its new home in Handsworth late last year. Under Ofsted’s new inspection framework, Oakbridge was found to be meeting expected standards across all areas of inspection. Inspectors described the provision as high quality and highlighted a strong culture in which pupils thrive.
The report recognised that many pupils join Oakbridge following prolonged periods of disrupted education and with significant gaps in their learning. Inspectors noted that, once at Oakbridge, pupils achieve well due to the school’s personalised approach, particularly in reading and mathematics.
Oakbridge’s curriculum was described as ambitious, well organised and carefully adapted to pupils’ individual starting points, ensuring access to a broad and meaningful education. Inspectors also praised the school’s calm, respectful environment and the highly positive relationships between staff and pupils.
Attendance was reported to improve from very low starting points for many pupils. Inspectors highlighted the school’s sensitive and supportive work with families, alongside flexible learning plans that help pupils to successfully reintegrate into full time education at their own pace.
The school’s commitment to inclusion was described as exemplary. Staff work closely with families and external professionals to ensure each pupil receives the precise support they need. Therapeutic provision, including speech and language therapy and occupational therapy, is woven into daily routines, contributing to pupils making strong progress and experiencing success both academically and personally.
Leaders at Oakbridge were described as clear sighted, highly effective and firmly focused on pupils’ needs. Inspectors also noted that funding is carefully considered and consistently linked to improving outcomes for pupils.
Staff development was highlighted as a key strength, helping to create a stable, skilled and committed team. Parents and pupils shared positive views about the education, care and support provided. The report also praised the school’s personal development offer, which prepares pupils for adulthood by developing life skills, healthy relationships, interests and wider experiences.
