At Hawley Woods, we know that education must prepare children not just for exams, but for life. Our life skills and PSHE programme gives pupils the tools to become confident, independent young adults.
From an early stage, children take part in activities that develop practical skills such as cooking, shopping, travel training, personal organisation and financial literacy. These experiences are carefully planned so that pupils learn how to apply their knowledge in real-world situations, gradually reducing support as their confidence grows.
As pupils move into Key Stages 3 & 4, the focus extends to work experience and careers guidance linked to the Gatsby Benchmarks. Our Business, Community and Enterprise curriculum encourages pupils to run projects, set up small businesses and engage with local employers, building teamwork and entrepreneurial skills. All pupils from Year 7 upwards receive 1:1 meetings with an independent careers advisor.
Through this blend of life skills and preparation for adulthood, pupils will leave Hawley Woods eager to contribute positively to their communities.
National Curriculum, subjects and qualifications
We offer a broad and balanced curriculum based on the National Curriculum, giving children the chance to achieve qualifications suited to their abilities and interests - from GCSEs to Entry Level and Functional Skills.
Outdoor and physical education
Our pupils thrive outdoors, taking part in PE, forest school, horticulture, and animal care. These activities support physical health, teamwork, and wellbeing, while encouraging a lifelong love of being active.
Life skills
From ironing to menu planning and shopping to travel training and money management, life skills sessions prepare children for independence. These practical lessons help pupils feel confident in everyday situations.
Community engagement
We believe in learning beyond the school gates. Children take part in trips, projects, and events that connect them with their local community, helping them feel valued and included. We have excellent links with local sports clubs, youth charities and Elderly care homes.
Enrichment and wider opportunities
Enrichment activities such as clubs, residentials, themed days and weeks, trips, and “Feel Good Fridays” in KS2, gives children the chance to try new things, discover hidden talents, and build friendships in a fun, supportive environment.
