Like many families who come to us, earlier experiences of education had not always felt positive or accessible. What followed has been a deeply encouraging journey of growing confidence, trust, and success.
Today, Bilal attends school every single day. They have achieved 100% attendance and have not missed a day, something that once felt out of reach. Bilal now comes into school feeling safe, settled, and ready to learn, with a clear sense of belonging within the school community. They take part in all lessons and enjoy a wide range of trips and activities beyond the classroom. This change reflects how secure and supported Bilal now feels and has been key in unlocking their progress.
Learning and Confidence
Over the past year, Bilal has grown enormously in their approach to learning. They show genuine enjoyment in lessons and increasing belief in their own abilities. Their progress in English has been particularly lovely to see, with a developing love of reading and a confidence to share ideas. Bilal enjoys being part of a small group of strong readers, where they feel encouraged to challenge themselves and express their thoughts.
Bilal is learning to understand how they learn best and confidently uses tools such as coloured paper and Irlen lenses to support reading and concentration. This growing independence is an important step in helping them feel capable and in control of their learning.
Communication and Belonging
One of the most meaningful areas of progress for Bilal has been in communication and relationships. They now speak with confidence, join conversations comfortably, and enjoy sharing ideas with both adults and peers. Bilal has built positive friendships and consistently shows kindness and awareness of others.
Bilal has also taken on roles of responsibility within the school. They are proud to represent their peers on the school council and have enjoyed being involved in student interview panels. Bilal often welcomes visitors to the school with warmth and enthusiasm, keen to talk about their experiences and what the school means to them. These moments clearly show just how far their confidence has grown.
Emotional Wellbeing and Support
Supporting Bilal’s emotional wellbeing has been a key part of their journey. Over time, they have formed trusting relationships with staff and feel safe to talk openly about how they are feeling. Bilal takes part enthusiastically in Level Up!, a mentoring group focused on confidence, self‑esteem, and resilience, and enjoys working alongside others in a supportive environment.
Bilal also benefits from weekly one‑to‑one mentoring sessions, giving them dedicated time to reflect, feel heard, and develop strategies to support their wellbeing. Through these experiences, they have grown more confident, optimistic, and hopeful about the future.
They have taken part in sports fixtures, school trips, and careers events, and enjoy talking about what lies ahead. Bilal shows excitement about future opportunities and takes pride in how far they have come.
Understanding Their Needs
Bilal has developed a strong understanding of their own sensory needs and is now confident in asking for what helps them feel comfortable and ready to learn. Whether this is requesting a movement break or a quieter space, Bilal is able to advocate for themselves calmly and independently. This is an important life skill that will continue to support them well beyond school.
Looking Ahead
Bilal’s journey at Hawley Woods School is one we are incredibly proud of. From a child who once found attending school impossible, Bilal has become a young person who feels confident, capable, and genuinely part of a community.
Their story is a powerful reminder of what can happen when children feel safe, understood, and supported to be themselves. Bilal is flourishing and is now beautifully placed to continue building a positive and hopeful future.
