This year at Leaways, we are celebrating Black British achievement, introducing pupils to inspiring individuals whose talent, courage and contributions have helped shape British society.
Our celebrations began with an engaging “Black History Month: Guess Who?” assembly, delivered by Kadeen, our Primary Teacher, and Jenna, our Primary Teaching Assistant. Through interactive clues and discussions, pupils explored the achievements of influential figures from sport, literature, music and film, including Lewis Hamilton, Marcus Rashford, Mo Farah, Nicola Adams, Malorie Blackman, Stormzy, Giggs and Rapman. Beyond their remarkable successes, the assembly highlighted the barriers these individuals overcame and the importance of resilience, determination, community support and self-belief.
Our English Department, led by Ryan Williams, also delivered a thought-provoking assembly exploring the challenges faced by Black people throughout British history. Pupils learned about individuals who challenged racial discrimination, including Len Johnson, Learie Constantine and those involved in the Bristol Bus Boycott. These powerful stories encouraged pupils to reflect on how society has progressed and why the fight against discrimination remains important today.
Literature has also played a central role in our celebrations, with pupils exploring themes of identity, prejudice and belonging through works including Malorie Blackman's Noughts & Crosses and Pig Heart Boy, alongside The Hate U Give by American author Angie Thomas.
Why does this matter? Within living memory, Black people in Britain faced significant barriers to equality and opportunity. While progress deserves recognition, racism and discrimination remain challenges in society today.
At Leaways, our message is clear: we challenge discrimination, reject racist language and ensure that everyone feels respected, valued and included. These principles reflect our school ethos of Respect, Relate and Respond.
Our celebrations will culminate in a spectacular finale, Leaways' Tribute to Music of Black Origin, featuring original musical pieces created by our talented pupils, alongside a special Afro-Caribbean lunch menu.
The Art Department will showcase the vibrant colours, distinctive patterns and cultural significance of African textiles through pupil-designed T-shirts in a special fashion show. Our collaborative collage, The Fabric of Leaways, will celebrate the personalities, abilities, gifts and talents that make our school community so unique.
Together, our pupils and staff make Leaways THE PLACE TO BE!
We celebrate achievement. We celebrate difference. We celebrate each other. Black history belongs all year round.
