Curriculum & Approach

Curriculum & Pathways

At Key Stage 2, pupils learn together within one pathway that builds strong foundations in core subjects and wellbeing. As they move into Key Stage 3, two pathways — Exploratory and Accelerated — allow pupils to access learning at a level that matches both their ability and confidence. By Key Stage 4, the model expands to three pathways — Supported, Exploratory, and Accelerated — giving every pupil a clear route that reflects their readiness and goals.

Supported Pathway
For pupils working more than three years below age-related expectations.
Learning focuses on life skills, communication, and functional literacy and numeracy through Entry Level and Functional Skills Level 1 qualifications.
The curriculum includes:

  • English, Maths and Science (Entry Level / Functional Skills)
  • Digital Functional Skills
  • Preparation for Employment
  • Self-Development & Wellbeing (Qualification)
  • Wellbeing (Emotional Regulation)
  • Mindfulness through Art
  • Food Technology

Each Supported pupil joins at least one mainstream option subject to support inclusion and confidence.

Exploratory Pathway
For pupils working up to three years below age-related expectations and ready to blend academic and therapeutic learning.

Pupils study a combination of Foundation-tier GCSEs and Level 1 & 2 qualifications, supported by high structure and individual mentoring. All pupils study English Language and Literature, though sitting the Literature GCSE is optional depending on individual readiness. Maths, Science (Combined or Single Biology), and a range of option choices such as History, Sociology, Creative iMedia and Food Technology.

Accelerated Pathway
For pupils who are ready for a full GCSE curriculum.

Learners follow English Language and Literature, Higher Maths, and Combined Science, alongside three options selected from subjects such as History, Sociology, Photography and Computer Science. They continue to access pastoral support, PSHE and Wellbeing to maintain balance and self-management.
