Castle Cinema is a historic independent cinema in Hackney that first opened in 1913 and was later restored and reopened as a community-focused cinema. Its unique character and welcoming atmosphere made it a fantastic setting for pupils to engage with film and storytelling in a meaningful way.
The documentary Authors of the Estate explores how residents from council estates are creating spaces to write and publish their own stories. It highlights the importance of representation and community voices in literature, encouraging viewers to reflect on who gets the opportunity to share their experiences and how storytelling can challenge stereotypes about council estates.
Following the screening, pupils took part in a Q&A session with the film’s director, author, and producers. Two of our School Council representatives asked thoughtful and insightful questions, helping to spark a rich discussion about creativity, opportunity, and the power of sharing real experiences.
After the event, pupils also had the opportunity to meet the filmmakers and take photographs with them. It was an inspiring experience that encouraged pupils to think about storytelling, representation, and the importance of hearing diverse voices.
