Sorrento Adventure: A Journey of Firsts, Confidence and Culture
This term, a group of Brookways students headed off to Italy for an unforgettable trip filled with culture, history and plenty of new experiences. For many of them, it was their first time travelling abroad and staying away from home, which made the whole trip even more exciting and meaningful. After an early start, they arrived in Sorrento, settled into their hotel, and enjoyed some well-earned time on the beach before a relaxed first evening together.
The next day, the group travelled by train to Pompeii, where they explored the incredible UNESCO World Heritage Site. They learned about its history, including how it influenced other ancient cities, and saw the powerful plaster casts of those affected by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Students also had time to explore in smaller groups, which helped bring the past to life in a really engaging way. It was a busy but fascinating day that left a strong impression.
Another highlight of the trip was visiting the beautiful island of Capri. After a scenic ferry ride, students took in the stunning views, rode the funicular railway, and explored the island’s shops and gardens. The famous single-seat cable cars were a particular favourite, equal parts nerve-wracking and exciting!
Things slowed down a little the following day with a visit to a working farm in the Sorrento Hills, but it was just as memorable. Students learned about traditional farming methods, including why everything has to be done by hand on the steep landscape. They watched how olive oil is made, learned how to make mozzarella from a local expert, and even had a go at making their own gnocchi. The best part? Enjoying a delicious three-course meal made from fresh, local ingredients. The day finished with some more time to relax on the beach in the Italian sunshine.
On their final day, students explored Sorrento itself, picking up souvenirs, soaking up the atmosphere, and even meeting some of the town’s famous cats. The trip ended with a final group meal before heading back to school later that evening.
All in all, it was another fantastic international trip for Brookways. Students came away with greater confidence, independence, and lots of brilliant memories and many are already excited about where their next adventure might take them!
