Therapy

At Brookways School, therapy is an integral part of everyday school life, not a separate service. Our integrated therapeutic approach ensures that emotional wellbeing, communication and sensory regulation underpin every pupil’s learning experience.

Therapeutic principles are embedded across the whole school, creating a calm, structured and nurturing environment where pupils feel safe, understood and ready to learn. Staff work closely with our on‑site therapy team to apply consistent, relational strategies that support regulation, engagement and positive behaviour.

Alongside this universal support, pupils can access targeted group interventions or personalised specialist therapy when required. Occupational Therapy and Speech and Language Therapy are delivered through a planned, timetabled approach within classrooms, with additional individual input available to meet specific EHCP outcomes.

This flexible, needs‑led model allows support to adapt as pupils progress, ensuring every child receives the right level of therapeutic input at the right time, so they can thrive both academically and personally.

Occupational therapy

At Brookway's School, our occupational therapy team play a vital role in promoting independence through functional, meaningful activities tailored to each student's unique needs. They assess and support the development of essential life skills such as classroom participation, accessing the community, and self-care using structured routines and sensory-informed strategies. By embedding therapeutic goals into everyday tasks, the therapists help students build confidence, motor coordination, and cognitive flexibility. Their interventions often include visual and sensory supports, adaptive tools, and environmental modifications to foster autonomy and engagement. Ultimately, the occupational therapist empowers students to navigate their world more independently, enhancing their quality of life both within and beyond the school environment.

Speech and language therapy

At Brookways School, the speech and language therapy team plays a key role in celebrating neurodiversity and empowering students to communicate in ways that are authentic and meaningful to them. Their work focuses on developing functional communication skills, while honouring each student's unique strengths and preferences. By creating inclusive, supportive environments and using person-centred approaches, the speech and language therapists help students build confidence in expressing their needs, choices, and feelings. A core part of their role is fostering self-advocacy, enabling students to understand and communicate who they are, what they need, and how they wish to be supported, both in school and in the wider community.
