Alex joined Brookways in September 2024 with a real love of reading and learning, a rich vocabulary, and strong academic potential. Alongside these strengths, Alex also found some aspects of school life challenging, particularly noise, changes to routine, and social interactions. Like many children, settling into a new environment took time, and at first these challenges could sometimes feel overwhelming.
With calm support and reassurance, Alex was always able to regulate and return to learning, showing resilience from the very beginning.
Feeling safe, understood, and supported
From day one, our focus was on helping Alex feel safe, secure, and valued. Staff worked closely with Alex to build trusting relationships and provide clear, predictable routines. A calm approach, low arousal spaces, and consistent expectations helped reduce anxiety and gave Alex confidence in the school day.
Alex was also supported to develop personalised strategies for managing emotions and sensory needs. These simple, practical tools helped Alex recognise how they were feeling and make positive choices, gradually increasing independence and self-confidence.
Learning, friendships, and confidence
As Alex became more settled, their engagement with learning really flourished. Small, higher-ability groups in English and maths allowed Alex to enjoy challenge while learning in a calm and supportive setting. Alex is now working towards a GCSE pathway, reflecting both ability and growing confidence as a learner.
Outside the classroom, Alex embraced opportunities to connect with others and enjoy school life. A role-playing games club became a favourite, supporting friendship-building and social skills in a relaxed, enjoyable way. Curriculum trips and enrichment days also played an important role in helping Alex feel part of the wider school community.
One particularly special experience for Alex has been regular visits to a local nursing home. During these visits, Alex formed meaningful relationships with residents and shared a love of music by playing the guitar. These moments helped Alex feel proud, valued, and connected to others.
More recently, Alex has taken part in a small speech and language group, supporting skills such as turn taking, listening, and using the right volume in conversations, all within a supportive peer environment.
Where Alex is now
Today, Alex is settled, happy, and confident at Brookways. They manage the school day with increasing independence and resilience, and challenging moments are now rare. Alex is fully engaged in learning, enjoys friendships, and takes pride in being part of the school community.
Alex’s journey shows how a caring, flexible, and strengths-based approach can help children feel that they truly belong, building confidence, unlocking potential, and supporting them to thrive both in and beyond the classroom.
