Fernways is proud to have been awarded the Skills Builder Bronze Award, marking an exciting milestone in our work to embed essential skills across school life.
Our learners have embraced the framework with enthusiasm, actively engaging in assemblies, lessons and tutor time to develop their essential skills. Staff are working hard to provide valuable opportunities for learners to practise, refine and build confidence in using these skills.
The Skills Builder framework helps learners develop essential skills that support them in education, work and everyday life. From communicating clearly and working with others to solving problems and responding positively to challenges, these skills can help learners become more independent and prepare for future opportunities. Practising them across different situations helps learners understand how to apply their learning beyond the classroom, including in relationships, their communities and future employment.
Achieving Bronze is an important step, and we are now looking to the future. We will further embed the framework into our curriculum, trips and clubs, allowing learners to practise and develop these skills across multiple areas of school life. These varied experiences will help learners recognise how they can use their essential skills in different settings.
We are also using the Skills Builder framework as the basis for our approach to personal, social and emotional development. By integrating essential skills into learners’ personal targets, we are helping each learner work towards their individual outcomes and recognise the progress they make.
In the near future, we plan to host a parents’ information evening to introduce the framework, share how it supports learning at Fernways and explore how families can support these skills at home.
