Mill School Bury is an independent special school supporting children and young people across Greater Manchester and Lancashire with autism spectrum conditions and communication and interaction needs. The school offers a safe, nurturing, and highly personalised learning environment where every student can thrive.

Our curriculum

Designed to build confidence, independence, and essential life skills, the curriculum is flexible and personalised across all key stages.

Key Stage 2

  • Three primary-age classes following the National Curriculum.
  • Emphasis on Phonics, Literacy, Numeracy, and developing a love of reading.
  • Subjects include: English, Maths, Science, History, Geography, RE, Computing, PE, Art, Music, DT, and PSHE.
  • Access to:
    • Swimming lessons
    • Outdoor learning at the on-site Forest School
    • Enrichment experiences through visits and events

Key Stage 3

Students follow one of two pathways:

Academic pathway

  • Aligned with National Curriculum subjects.

Functional pathway

  • Adapted curriculum focusing on life skills: cooking, budgeting, first aid, and more.

Both pathways include outdoor education to build resilience, teamwork, and confidence.

Key Stage 4

Preparing students for life beyond school through academic achievement, vocational learning, and life skills.

  • All students study English, Maths, Science, plus PSHE, PE, and Careers.
  • Qualifications offered at GCSE, BTEC, Functional Skills, or Entry Level.
  • Students select three optional subjects, including:
    • GCSE History, Geography, Computer Science, Art, Music, and more.
    • Vocational options such as:
      • BTEC Home Cooking Skills
      • Duke of Edinburgh Award
      • Sports Leaders Award

Outdoor and physical education

At Mill School Bury, outdoor education is a key part of the curriculum across Key Stages 2, 3, and 4, offering all students regular opportunities to develop confidence, teamwork, and resilience through nature-based learning. Activities include Bush Craft, physical challenges, and environmental education, supporting both personal growth and academic learning. In Years 10 and 11, students can also take part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award, which builds essential life skills through volunteering, physical activity, skill development, and expedition experiences. These outdoor opportunities are tailored to meet individual needs and help students thrive beyond the classroom.

National Curriculum, subjects and qualifications

At Mill School Bury, the Key Stage 4 curriculum in Years 10 and 11 is designed to prepare students for their next steps in education, employment, or training. The focus is on achieving academic qualifications while also developing essential social, vocational, and life skills, promoting independence, confidence, and self-esteem.

All students study core subjects including English, Maths, and Science, with qualifications tailored to individual ability. These include GCSEs, Functional Skills Levels 1 and 2, and Entry Level Certificates. In addition, students take part in PSHE, PE,  and Careers Education lessons to further support their personal development and future readiness.

Students also choose from a wide range of option subjects, allowing for personalised learning pathways. These include:

  • Academic qualifications: English Literature, History, Religious Education, Geography, Computer Science, iMedia, and Design & Technology (all offered at GCSE or Entry Level).
  • Creative and vocational subjects: Art, Music, Home Cooking Skills (BTEC), and Expressive Arts Award.
  • Physical and leadership development: P.E (GCSE and Sports Leaders Award) and the Duke of Edinburgh Award.

This broad and flexible curriculum ensures that all pupils, regardless of ability, have the opportunity to gain meaningful qualifications and develop the skills needed for a successful future.

Community engagement

Community engagement is at the heart of life at Mill School Bury, enhancing students’ learning experiences and building strong connections with families and the wider community. Over the past year, the school has taken part in a variety of events that promote creativity, collaboration, and personal development.

Highlights include Mill School’s Got Talent, where students showcased their skills, and the annual Sports Day, which brought families and staff together for a day of celebration and teamwork. Seasonal events like the Christmas Fair and Children’s Book Fair encouraged creativity, literacy, and community spirit.

Students also had the opportunity to perform in a production of Esio Trot at the Bury Met Theatre, boosting confidence and engagement with the arts. The Pawsome Walk supported animal welfare causes, while Emergency Services Day helped students build awareness of and trust in local emergency services.

The Year 11 residential trip to Durham offered a valuable experience in developing independence, resilience, and preparation for life beyond school. Together, these events demonstrate Mill School Bury’s commitment to creating a nurturing, inclusive environment where students are inspired to participate, grow, and succeed—both in and out of the classroom.

Enrichment and wider opportunities

Enrichment and wider opportunities play a vital role in supporting students’ personal growth, confidence, and well-being. 

A diverse range of activities is offered to ensure every young person can engage in meaningful experiences beyond the classroom. These include theatre visits and performance opportunities at the Bury Met, encouraging creativity and building self-esteem. Pupils also take part in music festivals, Christmas fairs, and other events that celebrate talent and community involvement.

Outdoor and physical enrichment is actively encouraged through a range of activities designed to build resilience, independence and physical health. These include:

  • Overnight residential experiences
  • Duke of Edinburgh expeditions
  • Well‑being walks
  • Swimming sessions
  • Sensory circuits

Students also benefit from a variety of animal‑based interventions, which further support emotional regulation, empathy and responsibility, such as:

  • Time with therapy dogs
  • Visits to local farms
  • Horse care and riding activities

Creative and therapeutic opportunities such as drawing and talking sessions, and gardening at the school allotment provide further support for mental well-being and social development. These wide-ranging activities reflect Mill School Bury’s commitment to offering a rich, holistic education where every student can explore their interests, build new skills, and grow into a confident, capable individual ready for life beyond school.

Vocational skills offer

Mill School Bury provides a wide range of vocational opportunities to help students develop practical skills and prepare for life beyond school. The curriculum is designed to support individual interests and future career goals, offering subjects such as Home Cooking Skills (BTEC), Design & Technology, Art, iMedia, and Music, with pathways leading to GCSEs, Entry Level, and other recognised qualifications. Students also benefit from Careers Education, Work-Related Learning, and Travel Training, which build confidence and independence in real-world settings.

Opportunities such as gardening on the school allotment, horse care, and participation in the Duke of Edinburgh Award further support skill development, responsibility, and teamwork. Through personalised learning plans, hands-on experiences, and strong community links, Mill School Bury ensures that students gain the vocational knowledge and experience they need to succeed in further education, training, or employment, while also developing essential life skills for adulthood.
