Over the last two weeks, each form group has visited Awesome Walls Stockport as part of our Outdoor Education programme, taking part in climbing sessions and working towards nationally recognised qualifications through the National Indoor Climbing Award Scheme (NICAS). The scheme provides a structured pathway that helps young people develop climbing skills, confidence, safety awareness and independence.
Throughout the sessions, students have challenged themselves on a variety of climbing routes while developing essential skills such as climbing technique, equipment knowledge, communication, teamwork and safety procedures. The programme has also encouraged students to build resilience, problem-solving skills and confidence when faced with new challenges.
We are delighted to celebrate the achievements of a number of students who successfully earned their Introduction to Climbing Certificates, demonstrating a sound understanding of basic climbing skills, safety equipment and climbing wall etiquette.
Several students also completed their Level 1 NICAS Award, which requires climbers to demonstrate safe climbing practices, effective communication, route climbing skills and an understanding of equipment and safety checks.
In addition, some of our more experienced climbers successfully achieved their Level 2 NICAS Award. This higher level requires students to show increased independence, improved climbing technique, greater route-planning ability and a deeper understanding of climbing safety and equipment management.
It has been fantastic to see students support and encourage one another throughout the programme. Whether celebrating a qualification, reaching the top of a wall for the first time or completing a challenging route, students consistently demonstrated teamwork, determination and a positive attitude.
One of the highlights has been watching students grow in confidence. For some, success was reaching the top of a climbing wall for the first time, while for others it was progressing to the next NICAS level. Every achievement, big or small, was celebrated by their peers and instructors alike.
The visits have provided a wonderful opportunity for students to develop new skills outside the classroom while working towards recognised climbing qualifications. We are incredibly proud of all students who took part and congratulate those who achieved their Introduction to Climbing Certificate, Level 1 NICAS Award and Level 2 NICAS Award.
Well done to everyone involved for their hard work, perseverance and commitment to their climbing journey.
