Year 7 Investigates Diffusion

Tuesday, 20th October 2026, 13:11

Our Year 7 scientists have been investigating diffusion by exploring how quickly Potassium Permanganate spreads through water at two different temperatures. By observing the movement of the purple particles, students compared the rates of diffusion in hot and cold water and discovered how temperature affects the speed of particle movement. A fantastic hands-on experiment that brought particle theory to life and developed students’ scientific observation and investigation skills!

Through their investigations, students discovered that particles in warmer water move more quickly because they have more energy, causing the Potassium Permanganate to spread faster than in cold water. This provided a clear visual demonstration of particle theory and helped learners make links between scientific concepts and real-world phenomena.

By planning observations, analysing results, and drawing conclusions from their findings, students further developed their practical investigation skills, scientific thinking, and understanding of how temperature can influence the behaviour of particles. A fantastic hands-on lesson that brought science to life and encouraged curiosity, critical thinking, and accurate scientific observation!
